Vaud wants to regulate the sale of cannabis

The canton of Vaud is preparing pilot trials for the sale of cannabis for recreational purposes. Approved by the Grand Council in March 2021, the project requires federal authorisation. In order to obtain this authorisation, the canton has presented a document setting out the measures that will make it possible to supervise the trials and guarantee their safety.

The canton of Vaud wants to regulate the sale of cannabis for recreational purposes. While cannabis is freely available in North America, it is prohibited in Switzerland. The Swiss authorities are trying to analyse whether a regulated sale could be more effective in combating the black market.

The cantonal authorities have detailed the measures to be taken to ensure the safety and quality of the products. Cannabis producers will have to obtain an authorisation to cultivate and produce cannabis products for pilot tests. Retailers licensed to sell cannabis will have to meet strict criteria, including staff training and site security.

Customers will not be able to buy more than 10 grams of cannabis per week and minors will not be able to buy cannabis. The authorities stress the importance of providing clear information on the risks associated with cannabis use.

The pilot trials of cannabis sales are a subject of debate with differing opinions. Supporters of the pilot trials believe that they will allow for better control of the quality and safety of cannabis sold in the canton, while opponents fear an increase in cannabis use and its consequences for public health.

The canton of Vaud is the first to attempt pilot trials of cannabis sales in Switzerland. However, federal approval is still needed. If this is the case, the canton will be able to put in place strict measures to guarantee their safety and effectiveness. This innovative project could pave the way for new ways of regulating and selling cannabis in Switzerland.
